Steve Plater – British Supersport Champion 2009
Steve claimed victory in the final race of the season at Oulton Park on Sunday to not only take the race win but also seal the British Supersport championship with a 36 point advantage over his nearest rival, Billy McConnell.
In the battle for the championship it was a two horse race as no other rider could overhaul the two front runners. Plater went into the race with an 11 point advantage over his rival and proved a point in qualifying when he set the fastest lap in the dying seconds of the session with a flying lap of 1m 38.706 – 98.18mph – well inside the existing lap record.
This fine result concludes Steve’s racing season for the 2009 season which has also seen him take victory at the North West 200 and the Isle of Man TT where he secured the historic victory for HM Plant Honda in the Senior TT
Steve Wins Senior TT
St eve saved his best for last as he powered the HM Plant Honda to victory in a record breaking Senior TT at the Isle of Man TT Festival. The race was run over six laps of the 37.73-mile course and Steve took the win, the race record and the Joey Dunlop Trophy in just his third year of racing at the infamous public roads course. STEVE PLATER 2009
Steve has joined HM Plant Honda and will contest the British Supersport championship with the Louth-based team in 2009.
He will also campaign the major road races to include the North West 200 where he will ride in the two Superbike races and also the two Supersport events in May prior to his third visit to the Isle of Man TT races where last year he took his maiden victory in the Junior TT.
Steve has been drafted into the Honda France World Endurance Team to replace the injured Jean-Michael Bayle and will ride at the Le Mans 24-hour race in April the week after the first round of the British Superbike championship at Brands Hatch when, in addition to the British Supersport race, the Lincolnshire star will ride the HM Plant Honda Fireblade in the two British Superbike races.
Steve said, “I came into the British Supersport series late after the TT last season, but was never off the podium when I did race and champ Glen only beat me the once at Brands, so I’m proud of that! It’s great to be back with a factory team and even better to be back with Honda after five years away. It was flattering to get the call, especially after I’ve been rebuilding my career over the last few years after injury. I know the team well from my British Superbike days and while I know next year’s British Supersport series will be completely different, it’s my job to go out there and win the championship. That’s why Honda is employing me and I’m going to give 110%.”
The Easter weekend is going to be a busy few days in the office for me,” said Steve. “But I thrive on being kept busy so am sure I can do justice to both classes. I haven’t actually ridden the bike as yet but have been on a similar Honda Fireblade this week as I have been in France testing for the Le Mans 24-hour race. I was called up to ride for the Honda France team after Jean-Michael Bayle was sidelined with a knee injury that prevents him racing at Le Mans.”

2008
Steve is to remain with AIM Yamaha to contest the British Superbike championship plus the North West 200 and the Isle of Man TT races in 2008.
Steve who rode the AIM Yamaha to victory at the North West 200 in May and also secured his second victory in a row for the team at the Macau Grand Prix in November also made his debut at the Isle of Man TT races in 2007.
Steve will also contest two World Endurance races in 2008, this time for the French GMT 94 Yamaha team. He will take part in both the Le Mans and Bol d’Or 24-hour races with the possibility of more if time permits.
