Steve Attends Launch f 2007 North West 200
Steve attended the launch of the 2007 Kennedy Group International North West 200 Road Races on Friday where it was announced that plans have been set in place to make Ireland’s largest sporting event bigger and better than ever.
Steve hit the headlines last May when he secured the win in both Superbike races at last year’s event and this has left him hungry for more of the same in 2007.
He said: “It has taken me a while to get that elusive win at the North West 200. I have ridden in either Superbike or Supersport eight times over the last few years and finally put it to bed last year and to actually win both races was the icing on the cake.
“It would be nice to do it again this year but obviously the rest of the guys will be trying for the same result. But on saying that I feel confident in myself as to what I can do so hopefully I can be as competitive as last year.
“I am definitely competing at the North West 200 on a Superbike but as to which team is yet to be confirmed. I am not quite ready to reveal my plans for the British Superbike series but hopefully I should be in a position to do so within the next two weeks.”
The Secretary of State Peter Hain MP also attended the launch and highlighted the major contribution that the North West 200 makes to Northern Ireland’ s economy, tourism and international sporting image. He said, “The International North West 200 is one of the key events in Northern Ireland’s sporting calendar and it is the thrill of road racing which attracts competitors and spectators from Ireland, UK, Europe and beyond. The North West 200 brings huge economic benefits to Northern Ireland. It is the extraordinary achievements and the history of the race over its 76 years that continues to draw record crowds. I wish the organisers every success for a terrific day’s racing.”
BBC Sport Northern Ireland is the official media partner for the Kennedy Group International North West 200 for the next three years. Coverage will include preview and highlights programmes on television, live commentary on Radio Ulster as well as a dedicated website. BBC Northern Ireland’s head of sport, Mike Edgar, said the three-year deal would provide fans with enhanced coverage throughout race week.
“The North West 200 is a massive event and we’re thrilled to have secured this partnership. North West 200 fans can look forward to the event’s most extensive coverage ever,” said BBC’s Mike Edgar.
Practise is on Tuesday May 8 and Thursday May 10 with racing due to take place on Saturday, May 12 starting at 11am.
